The Basics

The Big Questions about How This All Works

What is the Utah Challenge and what does it include?

The Utah Challenge is a virtual fitness challenge in which participants complete 369 miles over a four-month period. Athletes can participate in a variety of activities and the challenge period is open from 9/15/21 for Wave 1 through 12/31/21 and from 11/15/21 for Wave 2 through 2/28/2022. It includes a premium fleece jacket, finisher medal, and direct shipping to you.

What are the virtual races and what do they include?

There are five virtual races that participants can add on top of the challenge or just do on their own without the challenge. Each race features a different distance to complete and is themed to one of the Mighty 5 national parks in Utah (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands). Registration for each race includes access to an interactive course experience through the RaceJoy app, unique swag item, and custom finisher medal.

What is the difference between the Utah Challenge and the virtual races?

The Utah Challenge is a separate event that can be done all on its own. You do not have to register or complete the virtual races if you are just interested in finishing 369 miles.

The virtual races are additional events you can add to your challenge registration. The miles completed in each virtual race will be credited towards your 369 total.  Each one focuses on a specific park's spirit, scenery, and history. You'll rack up additional swag items and park-themed finisher medals.

Can you do the Utah Challenge and all the virtual races?

Yes. In fact, the series is designed for a comprehensive package to deliver the ultimate challenge. In the end, you will have completed 369 miles and collected seven pieces of apparel and six finisher medals. The Mighty package includes the Utah Challenge, all five virtual park races, and crazy discounts to honor your grits and determination.

Can you complete a virtual race without the Utah Challenge?

Yes. You can register for one or any number of virtual races. Bundle several together and watch the savings rack up!

Where can I do my challenge miles and/or the virtual races?

Anywhere! This is a virtual race that affords a ton of flexibility to fit your schedule and your lifestyle.

Do I have to complete my races inside the national parks?

No. Select the "Anywhere" course option in the RaceJoy app and start your race at your favorite running trail or just steps outside your front door. Wherever you are, you'll still get to experience a special enhanced race with custom audio messages and tracking. *See more info below about RaceJoy.

RaceJoy Details for Virtual Races

How to use the course app for an enhanced experience.

What is the RaceJoy app?

RaceJoy is a special app designed for the virtual races part of the Utah National Parks Challenge Series. It can be used on both Android and Apple phones. When the app is in use, runners will hear custom audio messages with fun and informative content to enjoy while you race. Learn, be entertained, and capture the magic of some of the most beautiful areas of the world.

Can I use RaceJoy for The Utah Challenge?

No, RaceJoy is only configured for the five park-themed virtual races. We're sorry for any disappointment this limitation causes.

How do I use the RaceJoy app?

Download RaceJoy from your phone's app store for free. Search for the specific virtual race you are looking to complete. Select the event and follow the on-screen instructions to get signed up. You will be asked a short series of questions to get you linked up to the event. This is separate from your race registration. Select the "Anywhere" route and start your race!

Can I use a treadmill with RaceJoy?

No. Two things...

1. The RaceJoy app uses your GPS location to determine when to deliver our fun custom messages. The app won't work if you are using a treadmill.

2. You will need to submit your results manually.
